In this hypothetical scenario I would be interested in what the AFL would charge us to play games at PP. Would it only be called Visy during the week or would the AFL get to collect a % of that sponsorship dollar as well? Who would pick up the tab to build us new training facilities (either on site at PP or further afield)?

Or would the AFL and state government just pony up the cash to re-develop the joint and then hand over the keys to Carlton and let us do what we wanted with the place.

We have a lease with Melbourne City Council that expires in 2035.

Think you could say goodbye to the Visy sponsorship there. They might take over the shorts.

Lease would be taken over and we'd pay to play/train there

Theoretically there are several ways you could do it. Keeping in mind that you still have rights to the lease for at least another 20 odd years you could transfer those rights to the AFL in exchange for benefit which may include reduced or offset usage costs, alternatively presuming the AFL provided a guarantee to utilize the ground into its fixtures, and local council gave a guarantee of continued lease post expiration of current arrangement (which one would think is in the best interests of the community) the club could develope it under a BOOT contract (Build, own, operate and transfer back to AFL after a specified contractual period) similar to the arrangement in place at Edihad. In this case the AFL pays the club as owner of the stadium an ongoing or combination of upfront and ongoing sum in return for usage. Or alternatively under the same criteria you could transfer the current lease to the AFL in exchange for a boot arrangement whereby the AFL developed and operates the stadium and then transfers it back to the club after a specified period. The latter would seem more plausible given the AFL may have the required cash, however the key determinant would be whether the AFL consider that strategically the development of the game will benefit from the location.

A simple transfer without receipt of something of sufficient value could not happen as it wouldn't be legally binding in contract. It cannot be a simple case of ill give you this and then you charge me to keep using it. Unless the club considered that the upkeep of the stadium was a burden, and forgoing its market value in exchange for releasing that burden was of sufficient benefit , but you would think that's unlikely as one would suspect the current arrangement is performing viably.

By the way, I'm neither for or against the idea.

As much ad I miss PP the MCG has to be the way to go. Central to everyone, largest capacity, the home of football....

What more could you want from a home ground?

I can't wait for the MCG to become home...That's what Malthouse will be pushing for without doubt.

They could be the two games that help us break into the top 4....

What are our other options then?

Stay at etihad where we play poorly...?

Im no fan of Etihad but playing better there is the other option.

7-4 rather than 5-6 is the split we'd be looking at.

The split that they'll put to Stephen Gough is 8-3. The MCG's contract with the AFL stipulates that a minimum of 45 home and away games are played there. For the MCG management, the desire for more higher-drawing games has become more of a priority than the pure number fixtured. So with Carlton being a reasonably high drawing team - it makes sense for them to have us as a 'tenant'. So this season we have a 6-5 split. Based on this 2013 draw below and what the MCG wants, the changes necessary would probably mean Greg Swann's request to the AFL must be to play Hawthorn and Geelong at the MCG as home games which probably means having to play them twice. That doesn't necessarily fit in with the AFL's equilisation policy that they're trying to implement, but the way to do it would be to have just one game against the Saints (instead of two) and possibly having two trips to Sydney per year (which I would consider a positive). So it should be an easy sell.

2013
1 v Richmond MCG
5 v Adelaide Crows MCG
6 v Melbourne MCG
8 v Port Adelaide Etihad Stadium
10 v GWS GIANTS Etihad Stadium
12 v Hawthorn Etihad Stadium
13 Bye
15 v Collingwood MCG
16 v St Kilda Etihad Stadium
19 v Fremantle Etihad Stadium
20 v Western Bulldogs Etihad Stadium Home 4.40pm
22 v Essendon* MCG

Our full draw (Home and Away) is actually 9 (Etihad), 8 (MCG), 5 (Interstate). In the greater scheme of things, this isn't going to change a hell of a lot with us being MCG tenants - but it's very obvious why we need 50k members and bums on seats at every game.

If we had an 8/3 split favouring the MCG we would get more memberships through that alone...

Much easier to get to and find a seat...the only positive etihad has is the roof.

But you can't knock them for trying.

Needless to say (or is that 'Neeldless') - if the deal can't get done, Swann has to go.

Yeah they wll go for that. Swann wont get that done.. and he wont go just yet.
He and Mick can get us Daisy you know? Thats at least 3 more seasons bolted onto his contract.

There is noooooooo @#$%&! way theyre gunna get 8 and 3.

For a whole myriad of reasons.
The AFL wont want one of the 2 Dome anchor tenants to abandon the Dome and leave it with more nuffy clubs. StKilda is falling away..
there are clubs with longstanding agreements with the G and those contracts and agreements wont disappear.
There is no way Melbourne and richmond will be losing their agreements with the G
There wont be more than one extra or max of two going the other way. Hardly life altering is it?

Pitched the right way, they'll go for it. The AFL do the fixturing though and 7-4 is a more likely scenario, but what-the-hell...who cares?

The best move - for financial and marketability reasons is to get a deal with the MCG who want more big games there and that is something Carlton can offer.

You can't be a cynic on everything the club is trying to do for the betterment of its future Synbad. Where Carlton plays the majority of its home games shouldn't worry you anyway - the games will still be beamed live to your living room.

i wouldnt care...

its just i dont see carlton doing alot of good stuff.. so of course i a cynic
you said it yourself... were average...

we will get one max 2 more games there.. and then what???

like i said thats hardly going to catapult us into the sphere of excellence is it???

an extra game against a crappy stkilda at the G....

like i said...

then what???

Magic wands are in short supply.

Incremental improvements are the way to go, there will be some stumbles, but just need to get better.
