Thread title is a little misleading - it should be 'up for renewal'....in October.

I was lucky enough to sit next to a Carlton Director on a plane the other week. He talked about how Carlton had no other choice but to invest in it's football department a few years ago (when we stabilised) and it was only when we could compete with the best that we could afford to pay down the debt.

Add some of the upside of the pokies, a better platform to recruit members given our performance - and hopefully a complete shakeout of our membership division (my addition, not his) - and we should be in a far superior position to make inroads in to the debt, if we so choose to.

Fair point - it makes sense that spending in the footy dept to incresae to improve performance and teh flow on is increased membership, sponsors, revenue etc..... hopefully

Until they're banned or regulated, someone will make money from pokie machines, why not us? Why do football clubs have to be the instigators of morality?

Yeah, its not so much the morality angle, although for me that is a consideration, but rather that the Club doesnt become too dependent on a revenue stream that is subject to the whims and fancies of Politicians. Then again Governments are so dependent on gambling taxes all they will do is fiddle around the edges. The figures the Age are suggesting are after tax as well so the numbers are staggering and if correct will see us become a financial behemoth in a relatively short period of time.

But the number of reserved seats sold and the expected crowd could push the profit to between $750,000-$800,000.

Carlton does not split gate receipts with Collingwood as it has in the past with other clubs, including Richmond.

The obvious is to balance the Footy Dept spending, it into a sustainable position for our revenue earning capacity whilst retiring debt as we go along.
Kung Fu coaches, psychological team building and underwater running machines are nice, but 7 million dollars is fair noose.
Other clubs have debt demolition events we like to keep up with the McGuire's in discretionary spending, yet without the 70k members, sweet draw and MCG deal and cash reserves...... Arizona or Bust (again)!
There could be a concern the debt may be used as leverage to avoid review and "democratic" appointment via the clubs constitution.
