Yep,i was there.Told the story many times.Took off to the dunnies just before half time.Couldnt believe it,i reckon half of the 121000 there had the same idea.Never seen so many people trying to get to the dunnies.Didnt bother me to line up as i was in no hurry to get back as i thought it was game over at half time.Anyhow, heer i am waiting patiently, and all these almighty roars.Christ im thinkin, the Pies have kicked another one.Anyhow, the roars kept coming,me oblivious as to whats going on.Eventually i made it back to my seat just before three quarter time.Christ almighty,we where back in the game and i missed all the excitement.Anyhow,we just kept it up and were swarming all over them in the last.............by the way,Jezza took that mark right in front of me..........

And just remember all you young 'uns

Big Nick is the greatest Carlton player of alltime
and Jezza is the best Carlton player of alltime.

Apologies to those who have read this before, but damn....it was such a Magical Day..

No, I wasn't at the MCG that day.

I lost the toss against a close mate, and had to work behind the bar at the Sergeant's Mess at Puckapunyal army camp. The place was full of Collingwood ferals in uniform that afternoon, only two others beside me supporting the Blues.

By half time I was shattered, and copping it big time from all sides. Deep down, I knew we were gone. But there was no way that I was going to let those black & white bastards wipe their feet on me, or my team.

So I started to accept wagers on a "points in" basis. The more they celebrated, the more leeway I got. Five goals was about the average bet. I was up for over $100 (more than a week's wages at the time) when the second half began.

Then came Teddy.
And Wallsy.
And Swan.
And Jezza.
And Sydney and Big Nick and every one of those beautiful, unbelievable, glorious Navy Blue heroes.

Seven goals down at half time - 17 points in it at three-quarter time.

That's when we started to believe – we can win this!

Have you ever had a sixty-five minute orgasm?
I have - on Grand Final day, 1970.

When Jezza's long bomb bounced and bounced and bounced and rolled through for a ten point lead deep into time on...
I couldn't help myself.

I stood on a chair, and yelled as loud as I could;
"YOU'RE #%##*+# COLLINGWOOD!!!!!!"
And they were.

I took their money, we took their flag, and three Blues in uniform celebrated long into the night.

Aside from my wedding day, that was the greatest day of my life.

Great stuff fellas, these wonderful anecdotes give me goosebumps and nearly bring tears to my eyes. Pathetic really

Historical context is everything.

And Mick

Very wise words. Couldnt agree more. Big Nick's commanding and menacing presence and leadership is unparalled in Carlton history. And if Jezza isnt the best Carlton player of all time (and I think he's the best I've seen), he was certainly the most electrifying.

Our great and inspirational new dual Brownlow medalist might be up there with them if he keeps going and we snag a flag in the next few years.

9 years old and my 4th grand final.
Hate was something my parents taught me not to have with one exception.
It was ok to hate Collingwood.
Remember leaving Vic Park in 67 or 68 and tearfully announcing to my Dad "I hate Collingwood".
As a previous poster wrote, you had to endure Vic Park to understand why we hate this mob so much.
First half was a nightmare. Was sitting at back of mcc members. Moved seats at half time down near front of members. Best move I ever made.
Jezza's goal ( and Syd's as well) will live in my memory forever. Thanks Blues.
Can't wait for my kids to share the feeling at our next flag.
Go Blues but for this week only-Go Saints.

The force must be strong in you.

Personally, I also think 1972 mattered the most.

I've said it a lot, and I think I've written about it here (I'll have to try to find it), but 1979 was definitely the most important, partly because it ushered in a new era for us, but MAINLY because it exorcised the demons of the 1970s that began in the 1973 GF and led to a SUPER champion team of champions not being able to win one flag, when it really should've won at least 3.

This is a pic I first posted some time back in ''Warby's Scrapbook'', of Tiger Crosswell kicking that goal in the last qtr. of the 1970 GF that put us in front for the first time.

Well !!.......we all went beserk with pent up emotion....hugging each other and crying tears of joy and relief.....and I'll never forget it.

Watching....is Barry Price and Neil Chandler; with Teddy Potter too scared to look.

Not sure I agree Moshe. Probably 1968 was the most important in that it broke a long drought, and the grand final experience was carried through right to 1995. We had a ruthless and far sighted administration and board that saw the future and went forward to it, a young coach who was the most original and far sighted in the game and for each era of flags players carried through to the next era. So players from 1968 and 1970 played in 1972/9 and 81, players from 81/82 played in 87 and players from 87 played in 95. Now with such a long drought we have lost that continuity of experience and culture. I don't really see the mid 70s as being a really lost opportunity. I think we fell away with greats like Big John and Serge S retiring, Brent Crosswell leaving, 4 coaches in three years, Southby slipped a bit as did Rob Walls. It was really the injection of youth with Marcou, Bucks, Sheldon, Harmes, McConville, Peter Francis, Wayne Johnston, and Fitzy coming back from Oxford that reinvigorated us in 1979
