Pardon my ignorance, but what effect does changing clubs have on a player's posession averages? They're still getting the ball the same number of times. :?

I used the stats.rleague website and imported everyone who played for each club into a spreadsheet, each club getting its own worksheet. I then copied every single worksheet onto one huge worksheet.

Judd shows in West Coasts worksheet and Carlton's worksheet so he shows up twice in the combined worksheet with his WCE average and his Carlton average.

The export to Excel function in IE made the inital job a breeze. Condensing everyone who has played for more than one club into a career average is going to take an eternity.

The most exciting thing about that graph is the amazing incline of Gibbs, it's over a fair period and it's a fair incline to boot! That's Talent.

My head nearly fell off when i saw Verbs list of the all time greatest ball magnets.....Terry Wallet above Diesel, and at number one...WTF?!

I never saw him play, or realised he was that good a player....

Surprised me too. The stats are only for his 101 games between 1986 and 1991. Would be interesting to see what his stats were like between 1978 and 1985. In '82 he got 17 Brownlow votes and in '83 he got 15.

Gibbs took off in 2008. Full steam ahead from here, despite Biff's strange theories. :-D

Gibbs played his first 16 games under Pagan.
The change to Ratten coincides with the upturn.

In fairness to Pagan, I think that the kids that played under him will benefit for the experience. He worked hard to make Walker an accountable footballer and Gibbs had similar tuition. Its easy to allow kids to run around like headless chooks and get kicks, but Pagan made them learn.

COnversely, one could say he didn't have a clue and stuck them in the back pocket instead of giving them opportunities to develop their creativity and decision making.

Verbs - I've done it for 1993-2005 - part of an abandoned project to study the effects of players changing clubs on their individual performance. Happy to share my spreadsheet with you if there is a way for us to get in touch by email.

Whilst not a precise determination of ability, possessions are still an important indication of a player's ability to do a lot of things right. The table below compares Murphy, Gibbs, G Ablett, Hird and Judd from game 1 to the number of games Murphy has played (less for Gibss):
