From Monday night's game, I recall the ball being raked to the ground by Setanta in a marking contest and it was collected at full pace by Garlett who was able to balance himself and take a running shot at goal (and he scored).

That was as good a goal assist as you can program.

It puts the players in their correct roles and was an execution of a set play.

This is a difficult operation to get right and even harder to defend if the small receiver is running hard to the contest so they are at full pace when they get to the where ball hits the ground.

Great work by the coaching staff and the players involved.

Setanta really is flying under the radar, even his team mates aren't aware of his impact...

I think he meant over the course of their careers

What we all see now is the Carlton side that wins the 17th flag - but one that is emerging about a half season earlier than I had anticpated.

Expect a lot more excitement and confidence between the players that develops going forward - In simple Black and White terms - the sky is the limit with this group.

String a few together in the next 5 or 6 rounds and it could even be that the new young coach is the one that guides us to an 18th flag.

Very poorly researched article for someone of Martin Blake's calibre - it was Alex Jesaulenko who brought the Mosquito Fleet together as a game plan when he took over as coach in 1978. Parkin did not come to the club till 1981.

As for Ken Sheldon - he could have done a bit more to make sure his son was part of Mosquito Fleet Mark II.

Now let me get back to my VCE Themes in Australian History Study Class - "Carlton Football Club - The Golden Years 1965 to 1995".

My sentiments exactly. BTW has Rod Ashman been cheated a premiership medal? Sure he had 3.

As an aside many commentators don't mention Peter Francis & Michael Young in flag discussions. These 2 had a huge impact in '79 and Francis was almost BOG in the '79GF.

It was difficult for me to crack into the squad with such brilliant footballers.

Francis was a gun. It shows how strong those sides were that he wasn't right at the top of the list.

Not to mention Barry Armstrong and Phil Maylin...

Funny reading posts about how in the modern game you need a "rotation" of about 10 midfielders.

We pioneered that 30 years ago...

A little bird tells me that Ashman was still a bit on the outer at the time as he had wanted a clearance to North Melbourne in the off-season and walked out on the club for a few weeks as well.

Although 'injured' in Round 22 against South Melbourne under normal circumstances was right to play and under any other circumstances would probably have been selected for the 79 Grand Final.

These sorts of stories make me wonder if we're too hard on a guy like Camporeale. Sure he had his faults but the scrutiny is so much harsher these days...

Yes.....I said to my Wife after that great set play; that I hadn't seen it performed that well by Carlton since John Nicholls tapped the ball back over his head at a boundary throw in to a running at top pace Syd Jackson who ran into an open goal.

Truly inspiring stuff.......
